Children's Action Network member, Governor Gregoire's proposed budget was released this week
with mixed news for children's health coverage:
Good News: Health coverage was
protected for children in Apple Health for Kids
below 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL). All children
below 250% FPL will maintain their comprehensive,
affordable coverage. And, the program will remain open
to new applicants.
Given the context of a huge budget deficit, the
preservation of this coverage--required by our cover all kids
law--tells us that children's health remains
a top priority of Governor Gregoire.
Bad News: Coverage for children in
families between 250-300% FPL was not funded in the
Governor's budget! We have already started working with
members of the legislature to advocate for the funding needed
for children waiting for coverage in this category.
It’s not too late! Send a
message to your Legislators to ask them to fund
health coverage for kids. Now is exactly the time to tell
Legislators to include funding for programs like Apple
Health for Kids in their budget.
Families who need health coverage now should still talk to an outreach worker about health care options: call 877-KIDS-NOW or www.parenthelp123.org. Sincerely, Jon Gould, Deputy
