Seattle school parents pressured to pay

Seattle Times

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Op-Ed By Alison Krupnick

It's time to call attention to a key issue plaguing Seattle Public Schools -  class size. Despite public comments from district officials challenging the relevance of class size to academic achievement, every teacher I've spoken with has cited large class size as one of the biggest impediments to effective pedagogy.

Working Dad: Dads can do plenty to help their daughters with image issues

Seattle P-I

December 27, 2007

By Paul Nyhan

My daughter sat in her creaky, wooden high chair last week, blissfully happy in her chubby 2-year-old frame, and I worried. I worried because in a few years this toddler will stand at the edge of the nation's body-image vortex, swirling with size 00 jeans, underfed celebrities glorified in gossip magazines, the latest "America's Next Top Model" and an unrelenting marketing drumbeat that skinnier is better.

Puyallup police deserve praise for creative detective work leading to the location of two young girls whose photographs were part of a large pornography cache. When police arrested an Oregon fugitive last week, it was on identity-theft charges. Forensics specialists then found images on a camera and computer depicting hard-core child pornography involving girls between the ages of 5 and 8.

Immigration

Welcome immigrants into democratic process

Seattle P-I

January 6, 2008

Op-Ed by Ethan Lo
