Feed Kids All Year
Even if you can't be at Hunger Action Day - you can stand up for hungry kids! Ask your legislators to protect funding for free school meals and make a small investment now to build capacity for summer meal programs in communities that have the highest need. Increase the impact of Hunger Action Day! Send your message now.
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , Almost one in four households with children in Washington State struggled to put food on the table in 2009, according to a recent report by the Food Research and Action Center. Hunger intensifies for kids in the summer, when school meals aren't available. The Children's Alliance released a report that finds that only 11% of kids who eat free or reduced price school meals during the year have access to a summer meal program. This year on Hunger Action Day, Friday, January 29th, I am asking you to protect school meal programs and leverage even more federal dollars for meals for kids during summer months. By helping communities in the greatest need to build summer meal progras we can decrease summer hunger for kids and leverage up to $4 million in federal dollars. You can read about the Children's Alliance proposal to improve access to summer meals: http://www.childrensalliance.org/sites/default/files/summertimechildhunger1-26-10.pdf Please do everything you can this year to leverage federal dollars and raise a significant amount of revenue to protect state programs and meet the needs of kids and families during the economic downturn. Modest investments the legislature has made in recent years have helped feed children during the school year, and keep them healthy and ready to learn. Thank you.
Sincerely, |
