Subject: Early learning belongs in basic education

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

When you used your veto power to remove early learning from the basic education reform bill (House Bill 2261) you set back early learning opportunities for children who need them most.

Low-income children, and children of color just don't get the same access to the opportunities they need to start school prepared to succeed. Kids can't succeed in kindergarten and beyond when they start school already behind. Including early learning for low-income 3- and 4-year olds in our state's definition of basic education is an essential step toward giving every child a real chance at success.

I understand that when you removed early learning from the basic education legisation, you stated that you want to create a program of early learning for all in the next legislative session. I will look forward to you keeping your promise - and making early learning a priority in the coming year.

Sincerely,
