Protect Kids
If the legislature tries to balance the budget with an "all cuts" approach, no child will be spared. Opportunities for all kids will be diminished. Act now.
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , As the economic forecasts for our state have gone from bad to worse, families all over the state are facing devastating losses and painful decisions. I am writing to urge you to craft a budget that protects children. Massive cuts to programs and services make an already precarious situation more difficult for children and families. We need a more creative solution that will support families and kids through this crisis. We are counting on you. During these tough economic times, it is critical to maintain the programs and services that keep kids safe, healthy and fed and put them on track for success. Kids can't wait until after this recession to grow up. You can see pictures of kids who are counting on you and read stories of families counting on you on the Children's Alliance website at http://www.childrensalliance.org/our-current-work/2009-legislative-session

| Background Information |
In recent years you and the Children's Alliance have won historic gains for kids in our state in the areas of health coverage, early learning opportunities, ending hunger and improving foster care. Now some of these critical achievements for kids could be undermined.
Washington State's economic crisis is the worst in decades. The deficit now totals $8 billion dollars. An "all cuts" approach to balancing the budget will mean devasting cuts to programs kids rely on. The cuts will go deep. Entire programs and departments will be eliminated.
